Make Music Day

Cable, Wisconsin (population 853) joined the Make Music Day Alliance in 2024, and hosted Summer Solstice Events in 2024 and 2025.

We added a Winter Solstice event for 2025, making us one of only two communities in Wisconsin (and one of little more than a dozen nationwide) to host an event for winter. Our next event is Summer Solstice, June 21, 2026.

What is Make Music Day?

It all started 40 years ago in France. In 1982, Jack Lang and his staff at the Ministry of Culture dreamed up an idea for a new kind of musical holiday. They imagined a day where free, live music would be everywhere: street corners and parks, rooftops and gardens, store fronts and mountaintops.

And, unlike a typical music festival, anyone and everyone would be invited to join and play music, or host performances. The event would take place on the summer solstice, June 21, and would be called Fête De La Musique. (In French, the name means both “festival of music” and “make music!”)

Four decades later, the holiday has spread throughout the world and is now celebrated in more than 120 countries. In the U.S., the presenting sponsor is the NAMM Foundation.

Musicians and Other Artists
We welcome all kinds of music and music-related performances such as dance and Tai Chi, and all ages and skill levels. The idea is for everyone to enjoy music whether making it or listening to it.
All performances are free and open to the public. Tip jars are allowed.
New for 2026:

Venues
The Hub at Mt. Telemark
In large cities, multiple venues are typically identified which makes organizing and coordinating more challenging. The first two events in 2024 and 2025 for Summer Solstice followed this model. Then we realized we have the small-town advantage. Starting with the Winter Solstice 2025 event, we hosted the event at a single site with the goal of bringing everyone together in one place. For Summer Solstice 2026, we will be hosted at the Cable Community Farm on Short Road.
